Amanda lives in poverty in Guatemala City and had a dream to become a hairdresser. She knew that having her own hairdressing business would help her, her boyfriend and their daughter get out of the cycle of poverty. Her inspirational story is an encouragement to all.

Radio Christmas began in 2008 based on a previous radio project we helped with called Christmas Cracker.

studio2008Radio Christmas is a project of STREET KIDS DIRECT a Registered Charity in England and Wales (No. 1102894).  The charity guarantees that 100% of all its donations go DIRECTLY to the projects they are supporting in Latin America.  Both the charity and Radio Christmas was founded by Duncan Dyason, a youth worker, who has a passion for reaching children and young people on the margins of society.

Our first studio (photo right) was built in the outdoor music room of the Curson's house in Amersham and when we went 'ON AIR' at 6am on the 1st December 2008.  We had very few people involved in the project and only a limited number of radio presenters and technical operators.  By the end of the first week we had a tremendous response from local people who embraced the concept and signed up to help.  The radio station became a very special part of our community's celebration of Christmas and has now turned into a very professional setup without losing the amateur nature and feel of the station.

The radio station is run entirely by a large team of volunteers, many of them children and young people.  We are grateful to all those who work tirelessly to help us produce some great festive cheer around the world.

Thanks to those who work in the programmes we support in Latin America, these are our real heroes.

Today the radio studios in Amersham, UK, are much larger and include a green-room and office space for news presenters, call operators and other administrative volunteers.

guatemala studioThe radio studios in Guatemala and Honduras are built late November in order to be ready for the live broadcasts every other year.

Many of the children that benefit from the funds raised on the station will participate and host their own shows and talk about how your donations impact their lives.

The studios in Guatemla and Honduras will also broadcast on our spanish-speaking festive charity radio station called Radio Navidad, and this usually broadcasts live when the UK stream finishes for the night.
