RESCUED FROM THE STREETS AND NOW HELPING VULNERABLE KIDS

When Sergio was 15 he was rescued from the streets of Guatemala and taken into a rehabilitation programme.

Adjusting after living on the streets for many years was not easy, but Sergio managed to get through two rehabilitation programmes and understand the unique challenges he would face in "normal" society.

Sergio now helps run a rehab centre near Guatemala City and has started to reach out to vulnerable children in the community where the centre is.

We will be featuring his story in a video that will be released on Radio Christmas in December.

BOY FROM THE CITY DUMP NOW WORKING IN PROTECTION HOME

We are very excite to annonce that 15-year-old Marcos has started working part-time at the SKDGuatemala Protection Home in Guatemala City.

Marcos has been supported by Street Kids Direct since he was about 9 years of age and was working long hours on the rubbish dump.  The charity grew increasingly concerned for him, his brother and mother when last year they were in a very depressing place.  Marcos´ mum does not earn much from working on the rubbish dump and this led to all manner of struggles and to them living in the corner of a garage. When Duncan visited the family in November last year Marcos could not talk, he would just lay his head in his lap and cry.  It was a very sad situation.

Thanks to Street Kids Direct supporters from Tunbridge Wells in the UK, alternative accommodation was provided for them (SEE VIDEO) and their new life started there.  Marcos continues to study from home and is now working part-time in the SKDGuatemala Protection Home in Guatemala City as a cook and cleaner.  His passion for cooking is clear and we hope will lead him in the New Year to a cooking course.

A video of his story will be released on Radio Christmas during December.

THREE CHILDREN ARE ABLE TO SEE FOR THE FIRST TIME

Thanks to donations raised through Radio Christmas and Street Kids Direct, we have been able to help three vulnerable children in Guatemala City.

During one of Duncan´s visits to a developing slum area of Guatemala he came across a family that were really struggling with life.  This family were not only living in real poverty, but three of the children could not see properly.

One of the boys explained to Duncan that the teacher would tell him off for not doing his homework in time.  When in reality the boy had only one eye that worked and he would have to concentrate so hard in order to see the text on a page and even then would have to lift the page right up close to his eye to see.  His brother had never seen anything farther than his hand all his life and his sister was basically the same.

Street Kids Direct stepped in and found funds, thanks to Global Care, to start the process of eye tests, operations and then measuring and fitting of glasses.

Little 11-year-old Brayan jumped with joy when he put his glasses on for the first time.  His brother David could not contain his excitement when he started to see trees and other things he had never seen in his 13 years.

Your support really does change lives, thank you.

TROUBLED BOYS ARE PROTECTED AND SUPPORTED THANKS TO YOUR DONATIONS

We would like to tell about three of the boys we have been working recently.  Three boys from very different backgrounds, but three boys whose lives will illustrate where so many of our kids are at.

It is not always appropriate to share on social media the type of work we do; due to the sensitive nature of the situations we work with every week. But this blog, from Duncan Dyason MBE, might help you understand our day-to-day work and the situations we are pleased to help with thanks to your support.

This year Radio Christmas will be run from multiple locations around the world.

The challenge this will be to UNITE THE WORLD by trying to involve and engage with as many people from as many countries as possible during the month of December.

Our main studios will be in Amersham, UK, Guatemala City, Guatemala and Tegucigalpa, Honduras.  There are plans to have people in the USA, Germany, Denmark, Frank and Switzerland participate in a varied selection of festive programmes.

The Guatemala studio will be a purpose-built studio that will operate all year long, thanks to the generous support of Darold & Pam Opp who have dedicated the studio to their grandchildren.

This past week the new radio equipment was delivered and will be fitted into the studio in Guatemala City as soon as builders complete the actual build of the studio in the new mentoring centre for disadvantaged and vulnerable youth.

Why not be part of the fun this Christmas and join us in uniting the world and offering hope at a time of a global pandemic?
