Turkeys are a great Christmas Dinner favourite, but how long do you cook it for and how do you know? Turkey cooking times are calculated depending on the weight, and if you’re stuffing your turkey, it will take longer to cook. If you do stuff it, weigh it once the turkey is stuffed and work out your timing from there.
Britishturkey.org.uk has some advice for weighing out your turkey and how to calculate its time. Here’s what it says:
If the turkey is over 4kg, calculate 20 mins per 1kg, plus 90 mins. If the bird is under 4kg, calculate 20 mins per 1kg, plus 70 mins.
British Turkey also have a variety of calculators you can use to work out defrosting and cooking times, as well as the size of Turkey you’ll need depending on the amount of servings!
To test if it’s done, make sure the juices run clear when you pierce the thigh where it meets the body. If not, put it back in the oven for another 20 mins, then test again. Don’t forget to let it stand for a while once you’ve taken it out of the oven- this will allow the juices to soak back into it to give you a succulent roast.
