Europe’s most spectacular Christmas market has officially opened its gates for the festive season — and, surprisingly, it isn’t found in the traditional holiday hotspots of Austria, France or Germany.
Instead, the crown goes to Craiova, a vibrant and fast-growing city in southwest Romania that has quietly risen to become one of Europe’s most dazzling winter destinations.
This year, the Craiova Christmas Market once again claims the title of the continent’s largest festive event by total area. Spanning an astonishing 280,000 square metres, it covers so much of the city centre that visitors often joke they need a map just to explore it all. The scale alone sets it apart, but its growing reputation is equally impressive: in 2024, the market was named Europe’s second-best Christmas market, just behind Poland’s Gdańsk, in the prestigious European Best Destinations awards.
Running from mid-November until early January, Craiova’s market turns the entire city into a shimmering world of festive magic. Millions of lights blanket the streets, buildings and trees, creating a warm glow that can be seen long before visitors reach the main squares. Families are greeted by a spectacular mix of entertainment — from glittering rides and themed zones to street food stalls that send delicious aromas drifting through the crisp evening air.
The event is cleverly laid out across four themed areas, each with its own atmosphere. Children adore Santa’s Village, complete with cosy decorations and whimsical displays. More adventurous visitors gravitate toward the futuristic intergalactic zone, while romantics are drawn to the Beauty and the Beast-inspired section, where fairy-tale charm takes centre stage.
More than 90 beautifully painted wooden chalets line the pathways, showcasing local crafts and regional produce. Visitors can browse handmade gifts, taste freshly baked gingerbread, savour mititei (Romania’s famous grilled sausages), sip steaming mulled wine, or warm up with a small glass of țuică, the traditional plum brandy beloved across the country.
Spread throughout Craiova’s grand squares and historic streets, guests will also find several headline attractions: a sparkling ice rink, a sweeping panoramic Ferris wheel, and even Eastern Europe’s highest-flying Santa sleigh, which offers a magical aerial view over the glowing city.
Best of all, entrance to the market is completely free, making it accessible to everyone. Individual activities vary in price — most rides, such as the Ferris wheel or children’s rollercoaster, cost between €4 and €6, while a special treat known as Santa’s Elevator, where children receive a personal message from Santa himself, is around €10.
With its enormous scale, creative design and ever-growing sense of festive cheer, Craiova’s Christmas Market has quickly become one of Europe’s most unforgettable winter experiences — and a refreshing alternative to the more familiar Christmas destinations.
